December (பூ)த்தாச்சு!

December symbolizes happiness. Waking up to rains, flooded streets, reaching for the umbrella/raincoat more often, the excuses to munch on deep fried stuff and ask for work from home options. This is definitely the season to get full use of that expensive raincoat/ rain gear and the time to take out those jackets that you splurged on for a 3 day trip to Coorg. But a rainy day is also the best day to focus and get work done. And I was under the impression that it’s just me. A simple google search revealed that ambient noise is a creative person’s best friend. A moderate background noise at about 70 decibels will help boost your creativity and productivity. And a heavy shower of rain produces the same level of ambient noise that you need to focus.

My brain would churn out words faster only when I was sitting in cramped buses, trains and busy restaurants. And that would be so infuriating because I would have no means to write them down. And like all good ideas, they will vanish immediately and no matter how hard you try to remember them, you will just have to wait until the next time you have a revelation.

A deeper google research ( literally the 2nd link) revealed that there are sites that let you play these ambient noises as you work. You can even choose if you want the ambient noises of a breakfast cafe, university canteen or a busy restaurant. But don’t turn up the volume too much, at a higher level ambient noise can completely distract you from your work. (https://coffitivity.com/)

A lot of creative folks tend to seek out solitude because they think that deep pondering alone will help them tap that creativity stream. When the truth is, nothing brings out your creative side like experiences, meeting new people and visiting new places. The best storytellers are always those who have listened to a lot of stories. Personally, I have found that breaking routine is a great way to infuse creativity. So go ahead break away from your routine and crack open your December creativity!
